11 Steps to Writing Killer Articles

I thought I’d give you a brief guide to writing really good articles. There’s a lot of stuff I’m going to cover here that will drastically improve your sales conversions. I’ll keep it brief but detailed enough to make sure it’s clear….

1.Research

If you’re writing about something you already know about then this is great but otherwise you are going to need to do some research. When researching make a list of key points within your subject and try and think about how these could be turned into short 100-150 word paragraphs – you are going to want to engage your reader as much as possible to hopefully make a sale after all.

2. Plan the article

Planning your article before you start writing allows you to make sure you have a clear structure and that you develop a strong case for the product or service you are promoting.

3. Choose a Tone

Choosing the correct writing style and tone is central to creating high converting articles. If you’re targeting small business owners you need to write semi-formally and use appropriate jargon. If you’re target product is beauty related then you might want to use a more chatty girly tone for the piece. Identifying your market means you will be able to tailor your writing to them.

4. Don’t hard sell

When article marketing you should very seldom attempt a hard sell. Rather you should focus on creating a balanced article with pointers in the form of “To get a complete product breakdown or find out more click here” rather than “you need this product now so visit www.cccnnn.com”

5. Don’t write a sales pitch

A sales pitch is fine for sales copy but when you’re writing articles you need to be balanced. You’re trying to make your reader find out more and not trying to make them buy – let your chosen offers do that for themselves.

6. Don’t ramble

If you start rambling and going off on wild tangents that don’t really go anywhere and keep repeating the same things without adding anything new (Like this sentence) then your readers are going to get bored and look at something else!

7. Use sub-headings

Sub-Headings break up your text and let people skim to the parts they are most interested in. One solid piece of text is very hard to read and not very engaging – don’t do it.

8. Don’t keyword stuff

You want to rank your articles with keywords but pay attention to the density of your keywords and don’t write sentences that simply don’t make sense just to add in your keywords. On low competition pages you can rank with a KWD of 3% no problem. Just try and keep the KW in your heading and first and last sentence of each paragraph.

9. Make your links clear

Signposting people towards your links increases the CTR (Click Through Rate) dramatically and you overlook it at your peril. If you can get away with it then have your link in a separate line such as – To find out more about losing weight click here- between paragraphs.  If not then make sure that you are making it clear as in – there are some really good resources available online to help you with x ; one of the best can be found here at www. Etc.com)

10. Proofread

Proofreading is central to good copy in whatever form and it is overlooked only at your peril. I once hastily wrote an article on writing a fantasy novel to promote a product and later found it to be riddled with spelling mistakes. It still converted reasonably but it would have done much better if it had been edited prior to publication.

11. Practice, practice, practice

A lot of writers don’t bother to correlate their conversions with the quality of their writing and never improve. If one of your articles bombs and one is a huge success look at the differences in the writing styles and the tone and structure. This way you can improve your style and improve your conversions.
