Pollution is a worldwide problem. It has been on the increase since man stepped on earth. And today, pollution has engulfed the whole world. Since the industrial enterprise, the invention of automobile, industrial waste, the smoke emitted from vehicles and the burning of different, kinds of fuel has polluted the environment on a grand scale. These pollutants have destroyed the purity of air, water and land to such an extent that human survival is in danger. Most of the advanced industrial states of the world are worried as how to keep the environment pure and clean.
There are many causes of pollution. The rapidly growing population requires more houses, more food, more vehicles and more facilities. Over the years, large tracts of agricultural land and forests have been converted into housing colonies large number of roads and drains have been built. More fuel wood, oil, coal or gas is being burnt for cooking purposes. This fuel emits smoke which pollutes the atmosphere. Large industrial estates, built outside cities years ago, are drawing nearer as the cities are rapidly expanding. The industrial refuse pollutes not only the environment but also drinking water supplied to urban population. The refuse disposed of into rivers or seas jeopardize sea life, especially fish. Sometimes oil flowing from a tanker, pollutes a large area of the sea killing the entire sea life within and around that area. The tanneries located in some cities, especially Kasur, give out poisonous liquid which mixes with underground water, causing various diseases. Similarly, their poisonous gases pollute the atmosphere making life miserable for the population living around. During the past few years, there has been an alarming increase in the number of vehicles which emit poisonous smoke, highly injurious to health. Sometimes forests,. which keep the environment pure, are leveled to construct roads, factories and housing colonies. With the forests, some rare species of wildlife are also exterminated Large-scale use of pesticides and fertilizers to grow more food also pollute atmosphere. Moreover, the people throw the garbage and filth beside their houses. Consequently, heaps of rubbish and garbage are seen everywhere in village and city. A pungent smell rising from this garbage pollutes the atmosphere and causes many diseases. In villages, heap of rubbish is often seen beside the wells from where the villagers get drinking water.
Last but not the least is the noise pollution. The noise of traffic and. factories and the deafening sound of the planes disturb the people's peace. The jarring sound of music and loudspeakers in city badly affect people's health. The mushroom growth of video-cum-music centers in city has disturbed the peace of people. The students can't study peacefully. Nobody can do any mental work in a noisy atmosphere. Different sounds and noise all around cause nervous and mental disorder among people.
Some preventive measures must be adopted to eliminate growing pollution. First of all, population should be controlled and planned. Unnecessary influx  of villagers to city must be controlled. Haphazard construction of housing colonies in city should be controlled and planned. With the check on the population, the number of automobiles can be limited. Moreover, smoky vehicles can be removed off the roads Factories and industrial estates should be set up at a considerable distance from residential areas, and their waste should be properly disposed of. Burning of wood and coal should be discouraged as they emit more smoke. Forests should, in no case, be destroyed. Instead, more forests should be grown. The use of pesticides and fertilizers can be limited to certain areas. Civic sense must be inculcated among the people so that they may not throw filth and garbage in streets. Those-who indulge in such practice must be heavily fined. Finally, the -people should be motivated to produce minimum noise. Mushroom growth of music 'centers must be checked. Unnecessary use of loudspeakers in mosques should be banned.
Though all the countries of the world are trying their level best to control pollution, yet it is a very complicated problem. The fact is that most of the such things as are necessary for our survival in this modem age. For  the pollution is caused by factories which produce goods, by vehicles which are essential for transportation, by fertilizers which are used to increase the yield of soil and by music which entertains us. Anyhow, efforts should be made to lessen as much pollution as possible. Planners, scientists and engineers of the world can sit together to think over this acute problem.
